I think our busiest week is behind us. (Tiny wave of fists up by my shoulders).
My last entry on Saturday morning I was a wee bit hung over after my Dark and Stormy evening at Honga's and the morning played out to be one of the most challenging mornings I have had in a while. I had an overhwhelming desire to spend a day doing very little decision-making and coordinating with any other humans, and it started out great, a little coffee on the couch, a little egg on toast, a little trip to the grocery store... where the Forester decided it was not going to restart because it had a little frozen moisture in the gas line.
I had timed my journey to the store to fetch a few items to make black-and white cookies for the Ophir Solstice party, in such a way that I would return with exactly enough time to bake the cookies, don my skiing attire and hop on the bus to frolic in the sun on the ski area.
The universe had other plans. By the time we got our act together and got the Forester back home I was rather antsy and fled the rest of the Fox family to ski by myself with music in my ears.
Here was my conclusion: I don't so much care about plans going awry, that kind of stuff happens all the time, but the bigger picture is that I find myself operating on much more efficient timeline than some other humans in my immediate life. What else do I always complain about? (Read with whining voice) I don't have enough time...
So what about THIS: I pick some slightly boring time-filling activity that has a creative outlet, and any time I find myself standing with my coat, boots, hat and gloves on, waiting for someone or something, I can pick up my little endeavor and fill the time. Not only would I not stress out, I wouldn't stress out the humans who are preparing themselves, AND I would be learning something new and producing something cool.
(I know the other obvious solution is for me just to leave when I am ready and meet whoever it is at a later time but that is not always polite or feasible).
So far my top two choices are knitting (Lynette you will do a tiny fist-waving when you read this, and perhaps you too, mom and Aunt Kitty) and playing a cute little ukulele. I am open to any and all other suggestions, so don't hold back.
But let's get back to the joys of skiing on a glorious December day. I had a great day on my skis, felt strong and capable and skied off my frustration fairly quickly. It is just so beautiful here. Say what you will about the fickleness of snow here, there is absolutely nothing like the climate of Southwest Colorado. Unbeatable.
I found JC and Little Rose on Peek-a-Boo, one of our favorite runs because it is on 4 but has natural snow and is not frequented by many humans, and is kind of tucked back in the forest a bit. It was a surprise to come across them on their last run, so we all went home together and Rose and I iced the cookies:
(I can't seem to make that go away or turn the right direction.)
Oh, I forgot, we got our goddamn tree that morning too - it was literally zero degrees out so it was kind of hasty but we not only topped a beauty of a tree, we also saw one they had topped a few years back that was growing and thriving in spite of having sacrificed its upper 6 feet to a Christmas home in the past.
Francis was off at hockey with his cousin so JC and Rose and I motivated out to Ophir for the annual Winter Solstice party, where a pot-luck and child mayhem ensued until they all went to bed and the adults stayed to see JC's band, Trico play until 11 or so. It was such fun and such great people, those Ophirites!
Rose stayed out for a sleepover with her friend Chloe and Francis stayed with his cousin in town, so we had a brief coffeecouch time this morning before departing, JC to Francis's hockey game and me to meet up with Ally for our usual Sunday morning yoga. We took it easy today, both of us grateful for a mellow practice and some chit-chatting.
Then I zipped home, suited up and skied really well all afternoon! Met up with the family for some late afternoon skiing - we now have Around the Galaxy, where we go up 4, up 5, ski over to Prospect, up 12, up 14, then all the way down See Forever. We were all four of us bombing around trying to catch the lifts before they closed. Fantastic finale to another glorious sunny day.
Lynette, our dear friend and former neighbor, came over for dinner and tree decorating and we are all pretty wiped out. In a good way.
