I am in Howard, Colorado for an Advanced Intensive yoga weekend at Jamie Allison's beautiful house/retreat center.  I taught yoga at 5:30pm on Thursday, then drove to Gunnison for the night so I could be here for both practices today.  The drive wasn't so bad until the very end, where I was just tired and ready to go to sleep - it was only 9:30pm when I got to Gunnison but I am usually slumbering by then.  I was determined not to hit a deer on that drive, and had a few near misses.

The hotel was inexpensive but kind of icky.  Why is it that you can be in a junky place that is trying to look clean and well-kept and it feels cheap and gross, yet you go to a hokey Western-themed place that is just as junky and is not trying to be clean and well-kept and it seems somehow... charming?  I don't know.  Maybe people shouldn't try so hard to make a place nice, when they can just pick some theme or style and make minimal extra effort by just being unique.  Note to self if I ever decide to run motor inn in the southwest.

Anyway, I was thrilled to exit the Super 8 and have an Americano and a bacon-potato-egg-green chili burrito at The Bean in Gunnison before driving over Monarch Pass and into Salida.

So far there are only 2 other women here and wouldn't you know it - one is from Telluride and her kid plays in Anthony's "band" - the other is from Summit County and knows both of JC's bandmates.

Their house is big - the basement is the yoga studio with poured concrete flooring that is heated, then we all convene in the main area for eating and lounging (her husband is a great cook and prepares the meals while we practice), and the top floor has a few rooms and shared bathroom.

I of course am hiding in my room during our mid-day break.  We practice from 10 - 1pm then again from 3:30 - 6pm.  They have a huge great garden but the house is noticeably lacking animals.  I expected dogs to be drooling on my yoga pants and getting hair on everything, or some dreadfully endearing cat to saunter in during practice and make some snarky interruption that we all laugh about over butternut squash soup and lemongrass-ginger tea later on.  No such luck.  It is very windy, however.

JC is home with the kidlings trying to figure out the best way to handle Anthony's hockey games (also in Gunnison) this weekend.  We have decided we are not doing any away games during ski season, for tons of reasons (if you really want to know I will happily list them out) but the ski season has not yet started so he is slighly flummoxed.

Kitty, if you are reading, I am preparing to explore the best way to leave comments here.
