Saturday, February 4

There I am at the top of my first Ophir ski tour!  Finally.  I look kind of worked, don't I?  We sat at the top of Jane's to eat our sandwiches, sip our tea and ready ourselves for the descent.
The skin up was kind of intense, just a lot to focus on, new information coming into my brain and a constant assessing of ski placement, pole placement, length of stride, blah blah blah, plus it was strenuous!

The ski down was less scary than I had thought, the snow nothing short of delightful.  All in all, an incredibly successful First Tour in Ophir.

We got home with enough time to eat a snack, change boots and skis (for me) and spend the second half of the day zipping around on the ski area.

JC bought me a new pair of skis, as it seems I have outgrown the pair I have learned on, so after yoga this morning I will be trying out a new feel for area skiing.  Early Valentine's Day present.

I think the secret to my success yesterday was the topping I made for my oatmeal: caramelized bananas!  I sliced one up, sauteed it in a pat of butter and a spoonful of brown sugar, then added Party Nuts (recipe to follow) to my oatmeal.  Wow.

The evening brought lots of hot tea, hot cider, crossword puzzle and more stabs at that creepy unicorn puzzle, reading and poking around on the internet.  Riddle me this: why would a unicorn with a glittery rainbow mane hang around a swamp?  And why does the red-haired fairy keep a small golden bird in a glowing orb?  Who is she?  What does she want?  Why are the unicorn's eyes half-lidded and slightly glazed?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Party Nuts:

Preheat oven to 350.

Toss 2 cups each almonds, walnuts and pecans with 1/3 cup maple syrup and 2 Tbsp. olive oil.  Ad a lot of salt and bake for 15 minutes.

You can add anything else you like to make them savory, like pepper, cayenne, rosemary, etc...

They are a staple in our house and are particulary good with an apple on a hike or a banana for a snack.
